Hello -

CBC estimates about 150,000 Canadians all told and several
million around the world hit the streets today to voice their opposition to Bush's war plans; here's a link to their report:

Indymedia estimates over ten million world-wide. I can't find a report on the Gatineau-Ottawa march yet, but my best guess is there were 2 to 3000 of us - given the bitter cold - with wind chill, it must have been about minus 25, especially on the bridge (which shook alarmingly at times).  We were a quiet and well-behaved lot - I think people were just too cold to do much besides keep walking - although, we did work up some steam, in both official languages, of course (and some Spanish) when we got close the the US Embassy.  We could have used a samba band!  Wish I had carried a notebook and written down some of the wording of the placards - there were some really clever ones.  Some worked better in one language or the other; e.g. "Stop the Bush-tchery" doesn't have quite the same panache as "Arrêtons la Busherie."  I understand there will be a pan-Canadian student action on Mar. 5 and Bush is scheduled to visit Ottawa on May 5 - will send more details as soon as I have them.

Peace be,

Chris

Calls to Action

We need to be thinking beyond this weekend's mobilizations; Michael Albert and Stephen R. Shalom provide some questions and answers.

Sen. Robert Byrd makes an impassioned plea for sanity in the US Senate at (Common Dreams is a wonderful site - see also essays by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Ralph Nader and more)

The Ontario Independent Media Centre has set up a 'Peace Page' to act as a CENTRAL HUB AND SHARED RESOURCE for the peace movement in Ontario...featuring event listings, reports and analysis, as well as print materials, petitions, other suggestions for action, and links to local organizing groups and national and international groups against the war.

News /information

Despite the propaganda barrage, a majority of Americans are in favour giving UN weapons inspectors more time to complete their work and are against unilateral action by the US.

A friendly warning on Iraq

and a chilling warning from Nicholas Kristof about "loose talk in the Bush administration about using nuclear weapons in Iraq"

Commentary/inspiration

See a great satirical letter to The Observer by Terry Jones:  "... let's face it, Mr Bush's carefully thought-out policy towards Iraq is the only way to bring about international peace and security. The one certain way to stop Muslim fundamentalist suicide bombers targeting the US or the UK is to bomb a few Muslim countries that have never threatened us."
