Dear peaceables -

I didn't actually intend to have a theme for this digest, but since I was recently privileged to host a house concert by a wonderful progressive singer/songwriter, Natalia Zukerman (www.nataliazukerman.com ), I have been exploring sites devoted to peace/social justice and music.
Enjoy!

Peace to all,

Chris

Calls to Action

A most enjoyable way to support the peace movement:  Amaze Me: Songs in the key of peace is a compilation CD of songs for peace, all by independent female musicians from across the US (including Holly Near, Tret Fure and Natalia Zukerman). 100% of the album proceeds will be donated to peace efforts, including Women Against Military Madness , DemocracyNow , Veterans for Peace (Twin Cities Chapter)  and CodePINK

Many years ago I was involved in the People's Music Network for Songs of Freedom and Struggle, and I'm happy to see they're still going strong.
See esp.  "10 Ways for Socially Conscious Musicians to Get the Word Out," in last fall's issue of Sassafrass, PMN/SFS's newsletter.
You can also link from the PMN site to other sites related to culture in progressive movements.

Scientists say a change in diets may be needed to enable developing countries to feed their people: ""Western diets, which depend largely on meat, are already putting great pressures on the environment. Meat-eaters consume the equivalent of about 5,000 litres [1,100 gallons] of water a day compared to the 1,000-2,000 litres used by people on vegetarian diets in developing countries. "
